Light flashing or car losing power: stop
If the light is flashing, the car loses power, shakes badly, or you smell burning or see smoke, stop somewhere safe and call for help. Driving on like this can damage the catalytic converter and other expensive parts.
Light on steadily and car driving normally: bring it in calmly
If the light stays on steadily and the car drives as usual, you can drive carefully to the garage. Just don't leave it for weeks.
First, one simple thing
On some cars, a fuel cap that isn't closed properly turns the light on. Check that it's tight. If the light doesn't go out after a few days of driving, it's time for a diagnosis.
Red lights mean stop now
- Red oil light: stop and switch off the engine.
- Red temperature light: stop and let the engine cool down. Don't open the radiator cap while it's hot.
- Red brake light: this can mean low brake fluid or a problem with the brakes.
How the diagnosis works
With diagnostic equipment we read the fault code the car has stored. The code points to the area of the problem, and from there we confirm the cause before replacing anything. You get the explanation and the price upfront. More on servicing and diagnostics.
