What is the APK?

APK stands for Algemene Periodieke Keuring: the mandatory periodic inspection for cars in the Netherlands, similar to the British MOT. It checks that your car is safe to drive and doesn't pollute more than allowed. The RDW, the Dutch vehicle authority, decides when each car is due.

When is my car due?

It depends on the fuel type and the car's age, counted from its first registration date (datum eerste toelating), not from when you bought it.

  • Petrol and electric: first APK at 4 years, then at 6 and 8 years. From 8 years on, every year.
  • Diesel and LPG: first APK at 3 years, then every year.
  • Hybrids follow their main fuel: a petrol hybrid follows the petrol schedule.

The easiest way to find your exact date is to enter your plate in our APK check. The answer comes straight from the RDW.

Can I do it before it expires?

Yes, and you lose nothing: if you do the APK up to two months before the expiry date, the new date counts from the old expiry date. So book it calmly instead of leaving it to the last week.

What gets checked

  • Brakes
  • Lights and signals
  • Tyres and wheels (the legal minimum tread is 1.6 mm)
  • Steering and suspension
  • Emissions and exhaust (electric cars have no emissions test)
  • Body and chassis, especially rust
  • Glass, mirrors and wipers
  • Seat belts

What if it fails?

If something doesn't pass, you get a list of what needs fixing. At our workshop we show you what failed, explain it and give you the repair price upfront. Fix it in the same place and you don't need to go to another garage. See also our servicing and repairs page.

Can I drive with an expired APK?

No. Without a valid APK your car isn't allowed on public roads and you risk a fine. If your APK has expired, book one straight away.
